There’s yet to be a D’Andre Swift sighting this preseason. Heck, his participation in practice is even limited. And that’s all due to a groin injury that he’s been nursing throughout most training camp.

Over the last few practices, Swift appears to be moving better than before. The Lions’ offense will need that as the first regular-season game in the new Lions era is on the horizon. While there’s progress with Swift, Lions head coach Dan Campbell doesn’t appear to think they’re out of the woods with his status.

“Swift concerns me a little bit,” Campbell told reporters. “Just with getting his wind back and being able to take a load.”

“How much can he? You know, ‘where he’s at?’ He’ll be out here today too. He’ll be more involved than he’s been.”

D'Andre Swift
Detroit Lions running back Jermar Jefferson (28) and running back D’Andre Swift (32) work out together during training camp at the practice facility in Allen Park, Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2021.

D’Andre Swift making the Lions’ 53-man roster is not even remotely in jeopardy. However, his absence has provided for other Lions’ running backs to get some shine. Jamaal Williams showcased glimpses of being an “every-down back” during the 16-15 loss to the Bills two weeks ago.

Additionally, Craig Reynolds, Jermar Jefferson, Godwin Igwebuike, and Dedrick Mills have had opportunities to impress the Lions’ coaching staff. Jefferson, whom the Lions drafted in the 7th round this year, has looked great in practice. He’s undoubtedly made an impression on Dan Campbell.

“I feel like every day Jefferson’s done a little bit [more], you know,” Campbell told reporters earlier this month. “He’s making a couple of runs here, [and] he’s got pretty good vision.”

Craig Reynolds has impressed coaches as well.

Reynolds has found his way into the endzone in each of the Lions’ first two preseason games. In 11 carries this preseason, he’s averaging 7.1 yards with a pair of touchdowns.

The Detroit Lions hope Swift will be ready to play in Week 1 vs. the San Francisco 49ers.
