Pistons Fan Guide: 2021 Free Agency Preview

Today officially marks the start of free agency in the NBA. The Detroit Pistons will start free agency with about 12 million dollars in cap space. But the franchise could get up to 22 million dollars in cap space with the team not resigning Tyler Cook and Rodney McGruder.

Who Could the Pistons Sign?

The Pistons are interested to bring a couple of new guys onto the roster. Those players include University of Michigan’s Tim Hardaway Jr, Kelley Olynyk, and Nerlens Noel. The Pistons need size as the team traded Mason Plumlee to free more cap space. Noel and Olynyk would be perfect big men to play with the second unit. At the same time, Hardaway would be a great veteran to come in as a leader and impact the court as well.

Sleeper players the Pistons could sign as well, including Malik Monk, Lauri Markkanen, Norman Powell, and DeMar DeRozan. All three players would significantly impact the team and could be a part of the starting lineup. But DeRozan could make the most significant impact out of any free agent due to his explosiveness and athleticism on the floor. DeRozan could reunite with Head Coach Dwane Casey. Casey was DeRozan’s coach when he was on the Raptors.

Restricted free agents Frank Jackson, Saben Lee, and Hamidou Diallo were all offered qualifying offers to resign with the Pistons for next season.

The Pistons will be significant players in free agency as GM Troy Weaver looks to add more veteran pieces to this young team. The Pistons are the second-youngest team in the entire league. So any of these players will be a great fit to impact as players and leaders.

Tonight at 6.p.m, players can negotiate contracts with all of the teams. But the players can not sign the contracts until Friday, August 6th at 12:01 p.m.
