Pistons Rookie Chronicles: Luka Garza

The Detroit Pistons drafted Luka Garza with 52nd pick of the 2021 NBA Draft.

Garza was the National Player of the Year in 2021 and is ready to take his talents to the next level. So, here is a breakdown on Garza’s offseason improvements, his biggest strength, and weakness that he can improve on.

Garza’s Weight Loss Training

Many were wondering why Garza was not selected in the first round. Well, it’s because scouts believed he is not as athletic and mobile compared to the other prospects in the draft. But he has completely changed the narrative on his athletic and mobility.

In the offseason, Garza went on a diet and exercise routine to help him lose weight. He lost 27 pounds throughout the offseason, and it has shown throughout Summer League. He has shown to be more athletic, mobile, and faster on the floor. His father, Frank, has posted videos of Garza training. And Pistons Twitter are in love with them.

Strength: Three-Point Shooting

Garza is a lethal three-point shooter. Garza made a goal his junior year to improve on his three-point shooting. He averaged 29.2% from three his sophomore year then 35.8% his junior year, and finally 44% his senior season.

Garza is going to make a significant impact on the Pistons because he can shoot three point shots. Especially in today’s NBA, every player on the court including big men need to be able to pop up a three in some form. Alongside Kelly Olynyk and Isaiah Stewart, the Pistons could have the best shooting centers in the NBA.

Weakness: Defensive

Even though Garza is a terrific offensive player, the one part of his game that he can work is defensive.

Before summer league, many were worried about Garza’s ability to guard the best centers in the game. Primarily he needed to work on his rim-protecting and going up and down on transition. In Summer League, he looks quicker and been more aggressive at protecting the rim. It’s the little improvements like these that will elevate his game to the next level.

Garza and the Pistons Summer League team will play tonight against the New York Knicks at 8:00 p.m.
