2022 Detroit Sports Christmas List

97

It’s the holiday season. But unfortunately, our professional sports teams aren’t in a giving mood. The Red Wings are falling in the standings. The Pistons shouldn’t even be in the standings. And the Tigers… well… they still play in Detroit.

It’s ok though. At least we have the Lions. What a time to be alive huh?

But there is definitely something or things that we would like out of our local teams. So I’ve put together a list of one thing I would wish for from each of our four clubs.

Keep in mind that some of these things can’t be under your tree in time for Christmas. But let’s just have some fun and go with it.

Detroit Pistons

Finish in the Bottom 3

You serious Clark? Yes I am. And we’re right on track. The Pistons currently are 8-25 which puts them in (keeps scrolling) last place in the NBA. Which is perfect!

If you’re unaware, the last three teams in the NBA have the same odds at the No. 1 pick in the draft. So there’s actually room for improvement. But we don’t want to risk it. Troy Weaver would dance naked down Woodward if he landed the first pick this year.

Unicorn big man Victor Wembanyama is a league altering player. The Pistons would be fringe Eastern Conference contenders if they land him. He’s that good.

Maybe Tom Gores can offer a $30,000 bonus for the guy voted lease valuable player or start offering fines for good play.

Detroit Tigers

Sign Brandon Drury

I’m not a big baseball guy. Not quite sure what the hell FIP means. But I had Drury on my fantasy baseball team last year and he did pretty good.

Don’t worry I asked for some help from Roger Castillo co-host of Woodward Tigers. He was in favor of the idea. He actually wrote about it in his article on 3rd baseman options for the Tigers.

“The market seems to be “very active” and it appears there are no rumors of the Tigers signing the right-handed bat.”

Well that sucks.

Detroit Red Wings

Acquire a Star Winger

The past few off-seasons the consensus has been the Red Wings need another legit center to go with Dylan Larkin. I used to subscribe to that theory. But not anymore.

Having a core of Larkin, Andrew Copp, Michael Rasmussen, Robby Fabri, and Joe Valeno down the middle. I really like that group. Not to mention the possible addition of Marco Kasper. I think we’re all good there.

I know the knock on that group is none of them are right-handed players. But when you’re a team that is struggling to just make the playoffs, I’d say that’s a lesser priority.

Where I believe the Red Wings could use a boost is a star goal scoring winger. David Perron is a good player. He’s not a long-term solution. Neither is Domink Kubalik.

One guy that is likely to be an unrestricted free agent this off-season is David Pastrnak. He tallied 48 goals three seasons ago and had 40 last year. Pair his scoring prowess with Larkin’s speed and Raymond’s playmaking ability and I think he could keep that pace up.

Detroit Lions

Win a Playoff Game

Lions fans don’t really have high standards. Understandably so. But with the way this team has been playing the last two months, just making it to the playoffs isn’t good enough.

They need to win a playoff game. This is a great year to do it. The NFC is trash.

You have the Eagles, who’s starting quarterback just got hurt. And the Niners. That’s it.

Are you really scared of the Cowboys? They don’t have an elite quarterback and their defense has some injuries.

You just beat the Vikings. And should’ve won the first time you played them. We’re not gonna start hyping up Kirk Cousins are we?

Have you seen Tom Brady play this year? He looks like a recently divorced 45-year old guy. The Bucs aren’t good.

Washington? Seattle? The Giants? The Lions are better than all of them. You have two teams that you want to avoid. And one of them should get the first round bye. So that leaves you with one bullet to miss.

It’s time to raise the bar a little here. I’m not asking for an NFC title game. I’m not talking Super Bowl. Just one playoff win.
