Building a Foundation: Red Wings’ Select Nate Danielson and Axel Sandin-Pellikka

The Detroit Red Wings made their mark in the 2023 draft by choosing Center Nate Danielson from the Brandon Wheat Kings in the WHL with their 9th overall pick. Additionally, they went on to secure a weapon at the blue line in Axel Sandin-Pellikka from Skellefteå AIK in the SHL as the 17th overall pick.

Detroit effectively addressed two significant voids in their lineup, satisfying the dire need for a right-handed defenseman while also establishing greater depth at the center position, fortifying their future prospects.

Nate Danielson, a towering 6-foot-2 center, exhibits remarkable skills at both ends of the ice. While there have been some uncertainties about his offensive abilities, considering the limited support he received in the WHL, Danielson still showcased exceptionally, contributing impressive numbers with the Wheat Kings. With the addition of last year’s draft pick Marco Kasper, the Red Wings’ center position is set to be well-rounded, promising a bright future for the team.

Axel epitomizes the essence of an offensive defenseman, with his remarkable skills in puck handling, playmaking, and accuracy in shooting, which make him a formidable threat every time he gains possession. His offensive prowess has the potential to mold him into an ideal power-play specialist for the Red Wings. Defensively, Sandin remains fully committed, demonstrating remarkable strength in the transitional areas between the blue lines and along the boards.
