Campbell Backs Goff Amid Lamar Jackson Speculation

As the Detroit Lions acquired Jared Goff in a trade that saw Matthew Stafford join the Rams before the 2021 season, chatter circulated about Goff being a temporary solution while the team sought a long-term quarterback. Despite rumors of a potential Lamar Jackson move to Detroit, head coach Dan Campbell has remained steadfast in his support for Goff.

No Rush for a New QB

Since obtaining Goff, the Lions haven’t pursued another quarterback, and Campbell showed no urgency to change that during a recent conversation with Tom Pelissero of NFL Media. The head coach expressed utter confidence in Goff. He cited his performance over the past two years as evidence of his suitability for the team.

Campbell enthused, “Goff’s our guy, man. He’s proven over the last two years that he’s made for us. He’s had to endure a lot, just like all of us have. I thought he played his best football last year, and I think he’s gonna come out and play some of the best this year. I love our quarterback position right now.”

Holding Onto Valuable Quarterbacks

The head coach emphasized the importance of retaining a reliable quarterback. Additionally, he’s also acknowledging that the Lions’ two first-round picks this year could present an opportunity to draft a player to develop behind Goff. His contract extends through 2024, giving the team room to strategize for the future. However, at present, there appears to be minimal consideration for any major quarterback shake-ups.
