Detroit Lions Bringing Back Kicker Riley Patterson via Trade with Jaguars

60

The Detroit Lions have finalized a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars, acquiring kicker Riley Patterson in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick. Patterson rejoins the Lions after a sensational season with the Jaguars, setting the stage for an intriguing kicker competition in Detroit.

During his tenure with Jacksonville, Patterson made good on 30 of 35 field goals (85.7%) and 36 of 37 extra points (97.3%). He earned AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors after a 13-point performance against the New York Jets in Week 16.

Detroit Lions Waive WR Keytaon Thompson

To facilitate Patterson’s addition, the Lions have parted ways with wide receiver Keytaon Thompson. The versatile receiver was an undrafted free agent out of Virginia in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Patterson’s Track Record Spells Success

Patterson holds a distinguished career record, converting 43 out of 49 field goals (87.8%) and 52 of 53 extra points (98.1%) for a total of 181 points scored. His career began with the Minnesota Vikings in 2021, followed by a stint on the New England Patriots’ practice squad before joining the Lions. He proceeded to set a franchise record after hitting 10 consecutive field goals to start his career.

Romo and Badgley Face New Competition for Kicker Spot

The Lions recently signed XFL kicking star Parker Romo, known for his strong leg, to compete with anticipated starter Michael Badgley. However, Patterson’s arrival could disrupt the existing pecking order. There will certainly be added competition in the kicking room, but it remains to be seen whether the Lions will continue to carry all three kickers on the roster moving forward.

Jaguars Opt for Brandon McManus over Patterson

Patterson’s move to the Lions comes after the Jaguars chose to release him in favor of Brandon McManus, a veteran kicker recently let go by the Denver Broncos.
