Detroit Lions Draft Versatile OL Colby Sorsdal

The Detroit Lions selected versatile offensive lineman Colby Sorsdal from William and Mary with the 17th pick in the 5th round (152nd overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft.

The 6-foot-6, 301-pound lineman is set to join one of the league’s premier offensive lines, blending veteran leadership with youthful energy. Sorsdal’s adaptability, a key factor in his selection by General Manager Brad Holmes, will likely see him transition to a guard position for the Lions.

A Dream Come True

On February 21, Sorsdal was drafted in the sixth round by the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL, an opportunity he was both honored and excited about. However, his ultimate goal was to play in the NFL. On Saturday, that dream became a reality as he joined the Detroit Lions, where his versatility and leadership will undoubtedly make an impact.

Athleticism and Leadership

Sorsdal brings a wealth of experience to the Lions, having served as team captain with 46 career starts under his belt. He boasts impressive athletic ability, demonstrated by his lateral quickness and ease as a second-level blocker. His experience at tackle will aid in his transition to guard, making him an asset to Detroit’s offensive line.

Sorsdal’s Impressive College Career

A five-year starter at right tackle for William & Mary, Sorsdal made an immediate impact as a true freshman. Despite the 2020 season being disrupted by COVID-19, Sorsdal continued to excel, earning third-team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors in 2021 and first-team FCS All-American and All-CAA recognition in his final season.

In addition to his on-field achievements, Sorsdal’s leadership skills and outstanding performance have earned him numerous accolades. They include All-CAA First Team honors, consensus All-American selections, and Associated Press First Team All-American recognition. His contributions were instrumental in William & Mary’s offensive success. They ranked fourth in sacks allowed and third in rushing yards per game.

A Journey from Hockey to Football

Before thriving on the football field, Sorsdal was an avid hockey player. However, his father encouraged him to explore football, where his size and physicality would be better utilized. His dedication to the sport, including early morning training sessions, is fueled by his desire to be the best. Sorsdal’s passion and work ethic have undoubtedly contributed to his success and will serve him well in the NFL.
