The Detroit Lions sign Benito Jones.
Jones was born and raised in Mississippi where he played football all the way through college. Jones was praised as a high school football star, earning multiple titles including being listed as the Number 7 overall recruit by ESPN.
In his four years at Ole Miss, Benito Jones played in all but three games. The 24-year-old recorded a total of 66 solo tackles, 31 tackles for loss and 10 sacks. After his time at Ole Miss, he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins in 2020.
Jones played six games in his rookie season with the Dolphins, logging 48 snaps and recording a total of one solo tackle. Jones didn’t see game action until week 6, but was active for 5 other weeks following.
Benito Jones still has a lot to prove going into his second season in the NFL. This preseason alone he logged 110 snaps, recording 7 tackles including two for a loss.
It’s no secret the Lions were looking for more size in the defensive line. Dan Campbell said earlier this preseason, “Now I will tell you this, I do think that we may need a little bit more girth up front. You know, I wouldn’t say that we’re not looking for that or won’t be.” If what he says stands true, Jones is exactly who they were looking for standing at 6-foot-1, and weighing in at 318 pounds.

Wednesday afternoon the Detroit Lions announced they claimed DT Benito Jones off of the waiver wire. Benito was the only wire order made by the Lions who held the number two slot in the wire order. RB Jermar Jones was released to make room for the defensive tackle.
