The NFL’s 2023 season kickoff is fast approaching, and every team, including the Detroit Lions, is hard at work solidifying its roster. Here’s an overview of the Lions’ recent transactions and the NFL’s key roster deadlines to consider.
2023 Roster Deadline
The approach to roster cuts has shifted this year:
- Only One Deadline: Unlike 2022, teams face just one roster cut deadline this year.
- Deadline Date and Time: Tuesday, August 29, at 4 p.m. ET.
Although the single cut offers more leeway for evaluation, teams like the Lions will still make strategic adjustments leading up to the final day.

S Scott Nelson: 6-2, 205 lbs, 24 years old.
- Detroit’s very own, starred at U-D Jesuit in high school.
- Went undrafted from Wisconsin in 2022.
- Had stints on the Seahawks and Steelers’ practice squads.
- Has a reputation for being a reliable tackler.
- Likely competing with Breeze and Brandon Joseph for final safety spot.
Transaction Note: To create space for Nelson, the Lions waived UDFA RB Mohamed Ibrahim with an injury designation.

WR Jason Moore: 6-3, 215 lbs, 28 years old.
- Went undrafted out of the University of Findlay 2019.
- Played four seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers.
- Played in 20 games, secured six receptions for 104 yards.
- Has a reputation for being a reliable receiver with good hands.
- Likely vying for the final receiver spot against Maurice Alexander, Chase Cota, and Dylan Drummond.
