Detroit Pistons Fred VanVleet Watch

Rumors have been swirling that The Detroit Pistons are looking to to pursue Fred VanVleet.

The Detroit Pistons are in a half-way rebuild mode right now. With new GM Troy Weaver taking the helm we are going to learn a lot about the direction he wants to take this team. His first Draft pick will give us insight. And his first Free Agent signing will be under a microscope.

That takes us to Fred VanVleet. He will be a NBA Free Agent this off season. Rumors are the Detroit Pistons are going to be in the market for the Raptors PG. So now the Fred VanVleet watch is on!

First Round of NBA Playoffs

The Toronto Raptors made quick work of the Brooklyn by sweeping The Nets. But like Chris Rock says “You don’t get credit for what you are supposed to do!” It would have been a shocker had this going any longer than 5 games. And it didn’t even make that.

VanVleet averaged 21.3 points, 7.8 assists and 4 rebounds a game.. Imagine that stat line nightly in the Pistons Red White and Blue! VanVleet has shown in previous post seasons. seasons that he can be a difference maker. He helped the Raptors win the Championship in 2019.

Game 1 Eastern Conference Semi Finals

Fred VanVleet struggled in Game 1 vs the Boston Celtics. He had 11 points on 3-16 Shooting and 2-11 form 3. Although, his defense showed well with 6 steals.

I don’t expect him to stay in a slump forever. But, if the Pistons are looking to give this guy 20 Million a year, I expect him to have a big bounce back. You can keep a scorer down forever and he will get his points. But what I’m looking for is how he leads a team.

What Should The Detroit Pistons Do?

Its clear the Pistons need to rebuild their back-court. VanVleet could be the guy to do it. One thought that keeps coming into my mind is Ben Gordon. Ben was more a pure shooter than VanVleet. VanVleet is a NBA Champion. But kind of the same streak shooter. We all know how the Ben Gordon signing turned out.

If the Pistons cant find their guy at the #7 Pick in this years draft, I wouldn’t mind getting VanVleet in a Pistons uni. But, if LaMelo Ball drops or we pick up a Haliburton I don’t necessarily think we need to spend 20 Million a year on VanVleet.

In Troy Weaver we trust. I think Troy will make the right decision for the Pistons. This being his first year he can not get off to a bad start. Lets all keep an eye on Fred during these playoffs!
