Detroit Tigers go college heavy in MLB Draft

The Detroit Tigers do not select a high school player in the new 20 round format. Here are three notables players to look out for.

With the picks of Jace Jung and Peyton Graham on day 1 of the MLB Draft, the Detroit Tigers went pitching heavy on days 2 and 3. Detroit selected 11 arms, three of which were lefties and the rest were right-handers. Here is how the picks went down:

  • 4th: RHP Troy Melton San Diego State
  • 5th: 3B/1B Luke Gold Boston College
  • 6th: SS Danny Serretti North Carolina University
  • 7th: OF Seth Stephenson University of Tennessee
  • 8th LHP Jake Miller Valparaiso University
  • 9th 1B Andrew Jenkins Georgia Tech University
  • 10th RHP Trevin Michael Oklahoma University
  • 11th LHP Joe Miller University of Pennsylvania

  • 18th OF Chris Williams Jr William Carey University
  • 19th RHP Albert Oliva New Mexico Military Institute (junior college)
  • 20th RHP Drew Conover Seton Hall University

Notables among the Detroit Tigers selections.

Left-hander Joe Miller, who the Tigers took in the 11th round, played for the Savannah Bananas. For those who are not familiar with the Bananas, they play a colorful brand of baseball. From wearing stilts at the plate to exceptional batting introductions, it really livens up the game. He served as the ace for the University of Penn, as they locked up a piece of the Ivy League regular-season title. Finally, his best two pitches are a slider and a fastball that is 91-94.

The second selection from the University of Oklahoma, Trevin Michael, converted from a starter to the Sooners closer in 2022. What first stands out is his numbers out of the bullpen were impressive as he struck out 95 in 71.2 innings pitched while picking up 10 saves. He features a fastball that can touch 96, a plus slider, which is something the Tigers have targeted recently. As can be seen below, Michael can throw an effective curve.

The Tigers 7th round draft pick, Seth Stephenson out of the University of Tennessee, can play all over the diamond. Last season, he played the infield while in junior college down in Texas. After he went up to Tennessee, he saw time in left and centerfield. He is considered an 80-grade runner and put up good numbers in the Cape Cod League, where he went 7-for-21 (.333)
