Detroit Tigers: Jeimer Candelario goes east

The trend of minor moves continued Tuesday for the Detroit Tigers as they signed a number of players to minor league deals.

They were/

INF Jermaine Palacios

IF/OF Brendon Davis

C Michael Papierski

RHP Miguel Diaz

Props to Eddie Bajek on Twitter who tipped off several people based on the Tigers transactions log. Both Davis and Diaz were in Toledo in 2022 and were late season call-ups. Palacios and Papierski were among the first players under the new President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris that were signed.

The Candy man heads to Washington

Former Tigers third baseman Jeimer Candelario was signed to a one-year deal. The story was first reported by Evan Petzold of Freep.com. Mike Rodriguez provided details of the contract.

It will be a welcomed addition of power for the Nationals, who got just 12 home runs and a -0.7 fWAR from 3rd in 2022.

Now, whether he returns to being just an average player like he was in Detroit (3.8 bWAR in 2021 & 2.0bWAR in 2020) it yet be determined, but he is just a season removed from leading the league in doubles (42) in 2021.

Will the Detroit Tigers be active at the winter meetings?

Detroit has some money to spend, but it may make a series of small moves. One pitcher that is off the market is Mike Clevinger, who signed with the White Sox for one year at $12 million. Speaking of the White Sox, slugger Jose Abreu signed with Houston. The deal is for three years worth $58 million dollars.

There are multiple directions the Tigers could go with starting pitching and relievers, but as far as the outfield goes, we highlighted what might be better alternatives. This could be an early opportunity to see if Detroit will make some trades.
