The Detroit Tigers fire hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh after one of the worst offensive performances in team history.

On Friday, Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch announced that hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh and quality control coach Josh Paul will not be returning to the club. The Tigers this season have one of the worst offenses in team history. They set the AL record for most times shutout in a season since the DH began in 1973.

– Asst hitting coach Mike Hessman and 3B coach Ramon Santiago offered jobs in player development
– Alfredo Amezaga will stay as 1B coach

Alfredo Amézaga, who was the 88th Mexican-born player to make his major league debut back in 2002, joined the team in the last month of the season from Toledo, where he was also a first base coach. Amézaga bounced around the majors and played in the Mexican League before retiring in 2018. He was a coach at Double-A Mississippi in 2019 at the same time Tigers pitcher Joey Wentz was pitching in the Braves organization.

Hinch said they will be talking to candidates for the hitting coach position. This quote from Hinch may give an indication of the things to come when it comes to building out the coaching staff.
