The number “28” is a number that hopefully Detroit Tigers fans will not have to see anytime soon. That number represented the number of scoreless innings by the offense heading after four innings in Game 1’s doubleheader against the Oakland A’s.

Jonathan Schoop lead off the 5th with a walk. Detroit would score their first run on a Derek Hill sac fly to center.

After a bloop single by Willi Castro that caused shortstop Elvis Andrus and left-fielder Chad Pinder to collide, Robbie Grossman’s grounded into a force out that would score Castro for the second run on the day.

In the top of the 6th, Jonathan Schoop, who had been making hard contact the last few games, hit a 407ft homer to left to give Detroit the 3-0 lead.

The Tigers would break it open in the seventh on a Jeimer Candelario double that would clear the bases to make it 6-0. He went 3-for-5 on the day. Detroit’s offense on the day collected 12 hits.

Skubal is emerging as the Detroit Tigers’ ace.

Over the last week, we have seen several good starts from the Detroit Tigers pitching staff. Skubal picked up where he left off in Houston. Skubal becomes the first Detroit starter this season to throw seven innings this season. He threw 92 pitches, 60 for strikes. He used his slider and four-seam fastball to generate both called strikes and whiffs.

An ace has been defined as a pitcher who can get you a win in order to get you out of a team’s losing ways. Skubal continues to do that among all the injuries to the rotation.
