Confusion Unknown to Mankind
It sounds like Jim Harbaugh returning to coach the Michigan Wolverines next season is likely. However, his language also seems to leave the door open for a potential job in the NFL.

It’s difficult to hide enthusiasm. If I am enthusiastic about something, you won’t have any question to the contrary. I don’t associate phrases like “while no one knows what the future holds” and “I expect I will be…coaching Michigan in 2023” with enthusiastic certainty. This is why I have a hard time believing the Harbaugh-to-NFL saga is over.
Since becoming the head coach for the University of Michigan Football Team, NFL rumors have swirled around Jim Harbaugh every offseason. He seriously considered leaving for the first time in January ’22 as he was being courted by the Minnesota Vikings. He interviewed with Vikings brass before ultimately returning to Michigan for his eighth season. At that time, Harbaugh reassured Michigan fans that he would be with the Wolverines “for as long as you’ll have me.” Despite this, rumors persisted after the team’s loss in the playoff semifinal.
Success at Michigan
Since his return to Michigan, Harbaugh has revitalized the struggling program. From his first season with the Wolverines to the present, the team has achieved a 74-25 record and won two Big Ten titles. They added two victories over Ohio State, and have made two College Football Playoff appearances. The most significant Harbaugh-Michigan relationship drama occurred after the COVID-shortened 2020 season, during which the Wolverines finished 2-4. At that time, Harbaugh had a 0-5 record against Ohio State and had not yet been able to come out on top in important games. However, he led the team to back-to-back conference championships and a combined 25-3 record over the past two seasons. This year, Harbaugh guided Michigan to its first ever 13-win season, although the team’s successful run ended with a loss to TCU in the Fiesta Bowl semifinal.
Previous NFL Experience
Before his coaching stint at Michigan, Harbaugh had a successful time as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. He led the team to a 44-19 record and two NFC West titles over four seasons from 2011 to 2014. Additionally, he lost in the NFC Championship Game twice during his tenure with the 49ers. He also reached the Super Bowl once, but failed to defeat to the Baltimore Ravens and his older brother, John.
Harbaugh Returning? For now.
For now, all signs point to Jim Harbaugh returning to Ann Arbor…enthusiastically.
