Jaden Ivey vs. Alec Burks: Who Should Start?

97

With training camp set to start at the end of month, Detroit Pistons fans are starting to get excited for the season to come. One of the main talking points of camp, will be whether or not Rookie Jaden Ivey can prove he is ready for the starting role. Or will a veteran like Alec Burks assume the role for the time being. Let’s make a case for both players and see if the Pistons would be better off with the rookie or the veteran starting?

The Case for Jaden Ivey

Many fans will be excited to see what the Pistons rookie can do this season. Does that mean Ivey is ready to assume the starting role right off the bat? Ivey was a top five pick for a reason, and his play in Summer League this year was intriguing. Ivey had a 20-point game against the Trail Blazers, where he also shot 2-5 from three.

There is no-doubt the Pistons will need more on-ball creation offensively this year, and with Ivey’s ability to use his speed and athleticism to break down defenses, the Pistons will heavily consider starting the 6’4 guard from Purdue.

The Case for Alec Burks

Burks was acquired in a salary dump trade this offseason. The Pistons acquired Burks as well as center Nerlens Noel. Alec, 31 years old, has played for a plethora of teams in his career. The most recent being the New York Knicks. Burks played in 81 games for the Knicks last year, starting in 44.

The case for Burks lies within the numbers. The Detroit Pistons shot 32.6% from three as a team last year, finishing 29th in the league. The Pistons need three-point shooting. Burks being a guy that has shot over 40% from three over the last two years, he could be the better choice. With questions still surrounding Jaden Ivey’s shot, Burks’ consistent track record could be the deciding factor in what could be a very intriguing training camp battle.
