Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson has won the hearts of football fans and was named the 2022 Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Year. The award, voted on by the fans, recognizes the top first-year player in the NFL.
“Surreal Honor”
“There were so many talented players in this rookie class, so it’s quite an honor for me to be named the 2022 Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Year,” Hutchinson said. “Considering some of the past Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Year winners, taking home this award feels surreal.”
Hutchinson acknowledged the support he received from fans, who voted for him to win the award. “I want to thank all the fans who believed in me and voted for me,” he said. “It is amazing to see the support from fans week after week.”
Impressive Rookie Performance for Aidan Hutchinson
Hutchinson had a remarkable rookie season, leading all first-year players with 9.5 sacks, three interceptions, and two fumble recoveries. Moreover, this impressive performance is similar to that of NFL Hall of Famer Richard Dent.

As the season progressed, Hutchinson’s play improved dramatically, particularly in his pass rush and run defense. Additionally, he produced an 89.6 PFF grade from Week 11, ranking third among all NFL edge defenders.
Defensive Rookie of the Year Coming Soon
Don’t confuse the Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Year with the Defensive Rookie of the Year. The NFL Honors will announce the winner of the latter on Thursday. The Associated Press votes for the Defensive Rookie of the Year, which will air at 9 p.m. ET on NBC and NFL Network.
