Lions Shine in Joint Practice with Giants: Key Players and Moments

74

Detroit Lions fans got a glimpse into the season ahead during their team’s joint practice with the New York Giants on Tuesday. With several standouts, the Lions certainly showcased why they’re a team to watch.

A High-Energy Start in Allen Park

From the moment the practice whistle blew, the Lions came alive. TE Sam LaPorta’s dap-up from fiery offensive coordinator Ben Johnson signaled the beginning of a session charged with enthusiasm. The teams began warming up on separate fields, but it was evident that the mere presence of another team invigorated the Lions.

Notable Offensive Players

RB Jahmyr Gibbs:

  • Gibbs channeled his inner “beast mode” under the watchful eyes of Marshawn Lynch who attended Tuesday’s practice.
  • Demonstrated exceptional skills in both the passing and running game, showcasing powerful runs between the tackles and a knack for eluding defenders once he hits the second line of defense.
  • Displayed explosive agility against the Giants’ defense, racking up yards after the catch after a few dazzling juke moves.
  • Rounded off the day with two touchdowns during 11-on-11 scrimmage reps.

WR Kalif Raymond:

  • Raymond made his mark early, proving almost un-guardable in man coverage.
  • Even with incomplete throws, his moves left defenders floundering.
  • His chemistry with Jared Goff was evident as he was repeatedly targeted and found in all drills.

WR Dylan Drummond:

  • The hype does not appear to be getting to the undrafted rookie out of Eastern Michigan University. He showed up today and performed as well as he has all of training camp.
  • His routes were sharp, and he wasn’t deterred by aggressive defense.
  • Made several catches in traffic, and connected on  two deep passes by Jared Goff. He has soft hands and impressive body awareness with the ball in the air.

Quick Hits:

  • WR Jameson Williams: Returned strong from a brief hiatus, displaying speed that not only threatened but opened avenues for fellow receivers like Drummond.
  • WR Marvin Jones: Perhaps his best practice of the camp; high-pointed a deep ball from Goff amidst heavy contact. His physicality at the line of scrimmage and with the ball in the air was impressive.
  • WR Antoine Green: Displayed evolving skills, notably in his route running on short and intermediate routes. Still made a nice catch on a deep ball that was delivered perfectly to his back-shoulder by QB Jared Goff.
  • DB CJ Gardner-Johnson: The dude has elite anticipation, there’s no other way to put it. From breaking up deep passes to jumping short routes in the red zone, he frustrated the Giants’ pass-catchers all day long.
  • DL Josh Paschal: Was a regular in the backfield, disrupting the Giants’ offensive plays.
  • RB David Montgomery: His success on Tuesday wasn’t limited to runs; a one-handed catch in the flat was among the day’s highlights in the pass game.
  • RB Mohammed Ibrahim: Made a mark with a spectacular diving catch and added trust in the run game.
  • TE Sam LaPorta: His bond with Jared Goff strengthens, becoming a go-to in critical plays. His physicality against the opposing linebackers was a noted improvement today.
