After one season with the Miami Dolphins, veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is set to sign a one-year contract with the Detroit Lions. The news, courtesy of NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, reveals a reunion between Bridgewater and Lions’ head coach, Dan Campbell. The two previously worked together during their stint with the New Orleans Saints.
A Decision in the Making
While Bridgewater’s rapport with the Lions became evident after a “strong contract offer” surfaced in early April, the final decision seems to have been influenced by his Detroit visit on July 24. ” we’ve kept in touch with Teddy, and we’ve kept (Lions QB) Nate (Sudfeld) abreast about that too… It was good. It was a good visit ” mentioned Dan Campbell.

Bridgewater’s NFL Journey
Entering his 10th NFL season, Bridgewater’s experience speaks for itself. The QB, who was drafted 32nd overall by the Minnesota Vikings in 2014, showcased his leadership most notably with the Saints during the 2019 season. Replacing an injured Drew Brees, Bridgewater led the team to a 5-0 record. Bridgewater’s stint also included time with the Vikings, Saints, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, and Dolphins.
The Lions’ strategy in roping in Bridgewater is evident: to have a backup for starter Jared Goff that they feel confident handing the ball to should Goff miss time. Bridgewater will likely vie for the 2nd string quarterback position against Sudfeld, who has been playing well during training camp.
Lions Eyeing Success in 2023
Coming off a strong 2022 finish, the Lions seem poised for a successful 2023 campaign. With Bridgewater in the QB room, the team appears to have a reliable backup plan in case of unexpected setbacks. Reflecting on the need for such a signing, Campbell mentioned that “you don’t want the wheels to fall off” if your starting quarterback goes down with an injury.
Conclusively, Detroit’s acquisition of Teddy Bridgewater appears to be a strategic move. As the 2023 season looms, the Lions seem ready to compete at the top of the NFC.
