The Matthew Stafford era in Detroit is coming to its end.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter (and multiple reports), Stafford and the Detroit Lions have agreed to parts ways. The reports state that the Lions will begin to listen to trade offers for Stafford this week. Additionally, it stated Stafford initiated the dialogue on this move. He suggested to the Lions’ brass that parting ways will be the best for both parties.
In his introductory press conference, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed his feelings on Stafford as a quarterback.
“Well, I’d say this, that’s another one we’re going to talk about”, said Campbell.”
“I need to sit down with Brad (Holmes). Here’s what I’ll say about Matthew is man, he’s a stud, all right. He’s a stud. He’s one of the toughest quarterbacks you’ll ever see. He’s extremely talented. I know he’s a team guy, and listen, I know he wants to win, and so, I’ll leave it at that. That’s what I do know.”
However, Schefter’s report said otherwise.
His report said both Campbell and Lions’ General Manager Brad Holmes knew of Stafford’s potential departure. This fact conflicts with what Lions’ owner Sheila Ford-Hamp several weeks ago. During the press conference confirming the dismissal of Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn, she said Stafford returned, it would be new head coach’s decision.
Nonetheless, Matthew Stafford will be on the market shortly.
Stafford, 32, just completed his 12th season as the Lions’ quarterback. During his time with the Lions, he’s thrown for 45,109 yards, 282 touchdowns with a record of 74-90-1. This past season, he became the fastest quarterback to reach 45,000 career passing yards (165).
