Interim Detroit Lions head coach Darrell Bevell said that Matthew Stafford’s status is “day to day” following injury vs. Tennesse Titans.
Calling Matthew Stafford one of the toughest quarterbacks in the NFL would be a gross understatement.
And because of this notion, Bevell didn’t rule Stafford out of action for Saturday’s game vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“So we have a short week, so we have one less day to prepare for him. He was sore, obviously coming out of the game”, said Bevell.
“He did take a couple of hits in that game that we talked about yesterday. Again, he’s tough as they come. He’s tough as nails. So we’ll basically do the same plan. I think he may be a little bit better than he was last week, but again, we’ll just continue to take it day-to-day.”
The hits Bevell spoke of came during the fourth quarter.
Before the fake punt attempt that led to Brayden Coombs’ dismissal, Stafford took some nasty hits on that drive.
The Titans drilling the Lions 46-25 officially eliminated them from the playoffs. And with virtually nothing left to play for, there was speculation if the Lions would consider resting Stafford for the rest of the season.
“To be honest with you, I don’t think he’ll let that happen”, said Bevell.
“These guys are true competitors. I think you saw his statement to you guys after the game. There’s a sense of pride; there’s a sense that you need to be there; you want to be there for your teammates. Obviously, to make it clear, we’re not going to put him in a situation where he can have a long-standing injury from this or repercussions from it.”
