Oliveira vs Fergson Is A Key Bout In The Lightweight Division

#7 ranked Lightweight Charles Oliveira is on the path to UFC gold and thinks a win over Tony Ferguson would earn him a shot at the title. Charles Oliveira vs Tony Ferguson is booked for UFC 256 on December 12th. A win over Ferguson would mark 8 straight wins for Oliveira. Currently, “Do Bronx” has won 7 straight fights all ending in a finish. During a recent interview with MMA Fighting, Oliveira made it clear that he should be the next challenger with a win over El Cucuy.

“It’s very clear: Whoever wins this fight is the next title contender. I have to stay focused and concentrated. He was coming off 12 wins in a row and I think he made a mistake against Justin Gaethje, so we can’t make mistakes in there. Winning this fight I’ll be the next challenger, no doubt. Seven wins in a row at the moment. It will be eight after this, and I don’t plan on leaving it in the judges’ hands. It will be eight finishes in a row. There’s no way I have to wait. I’m the next challenger.”

Oliveira Is One Of The Most Dominant Lightweights In UFC History

Oliveira has notable finishes over David Teymur, Jared Gordon, and Kevin Lee. A win over Ferguson should absolutely earn Oliveira a title shot. Not only is Do Bronx on a 7 fight win streak, he’s finished all 7 opponents. Sure, he hasn’t faced someone like Ferguson, but if he does in fact beat El Cucuy he’ll soar up to the top of the Lightweight rankings.

Tony Ferguson is still a dominant fighter though. Sure, he lost to Justin Gaethje, but he shouldn’t be overlooked in the Lightweight division. Before the fight with Gaethje Tony Ferguson was riding a 12 fight win streak. Just because he lost to Gaethje it shouldn’t erase all that he has accomplished. Truth be told whoever wins between Tony and Charles should get the title shot. No debate. This Spring the UFC should book a vacant title shot between the winner of McGregor vs Poirier and Ferguson vs Oliveira.
