Red Wings’ Prospect Sebastian Cossa Heating Up in Toledo

Detroit Red Wings drafted Sebastian Cossa 15th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft. In hopes that Sebastian will be the goalie for the future for Detroit. With the state of the rebuild, many Red Wings fans I’m sure didn’t expect GM Steve Yzerman to take a goalie that early in the draft. But if there is one thing we know about Yzerman, he constantly hits through the draft. Dating back to Yzerman’s years in Tampa, he selected Vezina winner Andrei Vasilevskiy with the 19th overall pick back in 2012. Yzerman notably acquired that pick from the Detroit Red Wings before the deadline.

Red Wings’ Cossa Continues To Shine In Toledo

Sebastian ultimately experienced some growing pains to start the year in Grand Rapids with the Griffins going 1-1, with a 3.50 GAA to go along with .850 save percentage. Meanwhile after being sent down to Toledo (ECHL), Cossa has flipped the script. Sebastian is now 4-2-1 through seven games with the Walleye, has a .913 save percentage with a 2.39 GAA. The timeline for Cossa’s development is lining up perfect for the Red Wings rebuild. Sebastian who is only 19, has shown tremendous growth as a player just ten games into his development stage.

Although we shouldn’t see Cossa in the Winged Wheel for years to come, this is great news for Detroit. After some early struggles with one of their most sought after prospects in the Yzer-Plan, Cossa seems to be taking the minors by storm.
