Red Wings get buried in Buffalo

Despite a valid 3rd period comeback effort the Detroit Red Wings fell to the Sabres 6-3, Detroit now is 0-3 against Buffalo on the year.

The Red Wings went into a Buffalo on a back to back, much like the night before they couldn’t get anything clicking until late into the game. Bad puck luck along with a red hot Buffalo offense grasped all momentum early in the game. The Sabres held Detroit scoreless through two periods, merely dominating them in all aspects.

Early in the third period, Dominik Kubalik scored twice just two minutes apart. The first goal being assisted by Elmer Soderblom who made a nifty move and found Kuby wide open. The Red Wings minutes later went to the power play where Joe Veleno extended his point streak to five games. Finding Kubalik for his second of the night and 12th on the season. Detroit pulled within one after Jordan Oesterle sniped.

Nonetheless after a few chances down the stretch in the 3rd period. The wound was far too deep. Kyle Okposo capped off the Sabres’ night securing his Hat Tricky with an empty netter. Okposo, who is Buffalo’s Captain had only three goals on the season going into tonight.

3 Takeaways from the Red Wings’ Performance

• Joe Veleno along with Jonatan Berggren continue to be bright spots offensively for this team. Berggren now in 20 games with Detroit has 11 points (5G, 6A). Veleno has been heating up after a slow start to the season. After only having five points through 29 games, he has had a point in each of his last five games.

• Filip Hronek had off night early, a few miscues early combined with some bad luck lead to one of his worst games of the year as a whole. But progressively throughout the third he showed flashes of working the kinks out of a struggling performance.

• Magnus Hellberg, who saved the day in Pittsburgh shutting them down.  In addition to some bad breaks early on tonight, has shown that he can be a serviceable goalie while Alex Nedeljkovic works his way back into game form.
