It would be safe to say that fan interest heading into the new season for the Detroit Pistons is relatively high and optimistic. But that’s not to say fans are not divided and on the fence about certain topics and debates. The main topic I’ve heard in recent weeks is if the Pistons should tank for top draft prospect Victor Wembanyana. Or if they should push for a play-in spot. What is the best-case scenario for Detroit?
Why The Pistons Can’t Tank
Tanking just doesn’t seem to be a viable option for the Pistons this year. If the Pistons are at the bottom of the Eastern Conference this season, then the current front office, as well as the roster will be in question. While tanking could benefit Detroit in the form of a pick at the top of the 2023 Draft. The development of the young core we currently have is more important. You must expose this young team to winning basketball. Another year of uninspired basketball will do nothing but hurt the morale of the team. If the Pistons are forced to tank it means that the development of the young core has stalled. Think of the Tigers this year and their failure to develop young players. The Pistons need to develop young players like Cade, Saddiq, Killian, and rookies like Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren, so playing as much competitive basketball this season must be a priority.
The Goal Should Be the Playoffs
The Pistons need to be pushing for the playoffs this year. If they are not, then we will have a problem on our hands. With the leadership of Dwayne Casey, and the young core beginning to mature, the best-case scenario for Detroit would be securing a play-in spot. The days of tanking in the motor city need to be over.
