Third-year linebacker, Josh Woods, will be in Motown for at least another year. On Tuesday morning, the Detroit Lions announced they’ve re-signed Woods to a one-year deal. The team did not disclose the terms of the deal.
The Lions signed Woods, 25, last September, from the Chicago Bears practice squad. In 12 games, and one start for the Lions, Woods tallied 28 tackles. Woods didn’t get a chance to finish his season in Detroit, however. The Lions placed him on the injured reserve list following a Week 15 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
Josh Woods sticking around in Detroit means several things.
Firstly, the Lions added to their depth at the position. Decimated by injuries last season, it’s smart of the Lions to get ahead of the program with adding bodies. By keeping Woods, they’re saying (without saying) that they like him. Secondly, they’re familiar with him. Josh Woods knows the defense Aaron Glenn is running. He’s aware of the expectations in his role. Because of that, he’s a fit. Lastly, with little production last season, Woods surely was an inexpensive signing, even though terms of his contract weren’t disclosed.
The Detroit Lions have significant changes on the horizon. Linebackers Alex Anzalone and Jalen Reeves-Maybin will become unrestricted free agents in March. It’s no telling if either returns. Then there’s Derrick Barnes. After his showing last year, he’ll command more time. Changes in the Lions lineup could create more opportunity for Woods to shine.
Regardless of whether he gets more playing time or not, this is a win for Detroit. The Lions bring back one of their key pieces on the special teams unit.
Josh Woods is the second player the Lions re-signed in nearly a week’s time. Last week, the team re-signed fullback Jason Cabinda to a one-year deal as well.
