“When does the Jamo drama end?” – Terry Foster
For the first time my confidence in Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams making a huge impact this season is shaken.
The hamstring sustained during Wednesday’s joint practice with Jacksonville did it. There is too much drama and noise that follows Jameson and it doesn’t seem to stop.
It also means we won’t see him during any of the remaining preseason games, which is critical for a guy who will miss the first six games of the season because of suspension.
The guy has been with the Lions less than two years and has filled newspapers and newscasts with more drama than Days of Our Lives. There are the dropped passes in practice and games, the social media goofs and immaturity.
In the corner for Jamo
Lions Coach Dan Campbell isn’t sweating it. Or that is what he says. I’ve been one of the few to stand in Jameson’s corner and predict greatness. But when one mishap after another keeps piling up the guy is either unlucky or just wasn’t meant to play in Detroit any time soon.
“As long as he stays on top of the mental portion of it, you can get a lot out of the mental work,” Campbell said. “If he grinds on that, takes care of the hamstring, we’ll take it as it comes.”
I’m sure some of you are wondering what’s the big deal. He returns in Week 7 Oct. 22 against the Baltimore Ravens whether he is injured or healthy. That’s true. I’m shaken because there always seems to be something new with this guy. When does it stop?
“He misses the reps,” Campbell said. “You kind of alluded to it, but that’s the chance to get full-speed, full-tilt reps. The timing of the pass game, lining up. All of it. There’ll be a setback with it but it’s also, you take it as it comes. I’m not going to sweat it.”
There is a second set back here. Backup Teddy Bridgewater vowed to mentor Jameson and show him tough love when need be so starter Jared Goff doesn’t have to. Jameson won’t be allowed in the practice facility for much of his suspension which makes it more difficult for Bridgewater to work his magic.
