Why all the hate for Lions LB Alex Anzalone?

54

As the Detroit Lions re-signed linebacker Alex Anzalone, some fans were left scratching their heads, wondering why the team would bring back a player who didn’t perform well in his first year. However, there are several reasons why this move makes sense.

First and foremost, Alex Anzalone is a tough player who makes plays. He fits the Lions culture and what they are trying to do on the field. While he may not be as fast as some of the more coveted linebackers in the league, he is also much more affordable. Lions General Manager Brad Holmes is building the team the right way, looking for deals when he goes shopping rather than splurging on expensive players.

Another reason why re-signing Anzalone was a smart move is that off-ball linebacker is no longer a premium position in the NFL. While some teams are willing to spend big on linebackers like Bobby Wagner, Bobby Okereke, and Tremaine Edmonds, others recognize that there is little value in such signings. The Bears, for example, signed Edmonds to a four-year, $72 million contract, while the Lions re-signed Anzalone to a much more reasonable three-year, $18.75 million deal.

Alex Anzalone’s rocky start

Of course, there are some who will never forgive Anzalone for his rocky start with the Lions. However, it’s important to remember that he played much better last season, leading the team in defensive snaps, tackles, and tackles for losses. The team also voted him as captain, demonstrating that he possesses both leadership skills and the ability to perform on the field.

Ultimately, Holmes is looking to build a team that fits the Lions culture and budget, and Anzalone is a player who checks both boxes. While the Lions may make a splash with big-name signings at some point, for now, re-signing Anzalone was the right move. It’s time to put the Hater-aide away and give this linebacker the credit he deserves.
