Lions LT Taylor Decker out at least a month

Well, the Taylor Decker news for the Detroit Lions took another turn on Saturday afternoon. And it is one that Dan Campbell alluded to on Friday.

Ian Rapoport from the NFL Network reported that the Lions will place Decker on IR following his finger surgery. The expectation is he will be out of action for at least a month. Decker suffered the injury earlier this week during pass protection drills, Campbell told reporters on Friday. He followed up by stating it appeared his star left tackle would need surgery.

With Decker out, all signs point to rookie Penei Sewell getting the start at left tackle. Sewell, whom the Lions drafted 7th overall this year, played left tackle at Oregon. So it’s a natural fit for him. However, with the Lions already having Decker, the Lions began transitioning Sewell to the right tackle, where he’s struggled during the preseason.

Campbell wasn’t ready to jump the gun when asked if switching Sewell back to the left tackle could hinder his development.

“To be honest with you, I think it’s too early to even say on all of that,” said Campbell. “Right now, we’ve got to figure out what we’re going to do for this one. It’s all about San Fran and what gives us the best chance to win.”

“So, like I said, we’ll work those combinations and figure out what’s best for us.”

The Detroit Lions will open their season at home as they face the 49ers at Ford Field. The kickoff is at 1 p.m.
