Jared Goff Is the MVP Frontrunner If You Actually Watch the Games
If the Lions were undefeated right now, Jared Goff would be the consensus MVP favorite. Nothing about his play would change — just the narrative around him.
Here’s the question nobody wants to answer honestly: What exactly is Jared Goff missing from his MVP resume besides an undefeated record?
Think about it. The Lions are rolling. Goff is executing at an elite level. When Detroit needs him to air it out for 300-plus yards in a shootout, he delivers. When they need to manage the game and let the whole offense eat, he does that too. But somehow, he’s still not “the guy” to most people.
Why? Because he doesn’t look the part?
The Double Standard Is Real
Let’s be real about what’s happening here. Patrick Mahomes is getting MVP buzz despite not having his best season. Why? Because he’s Patrick Mahomes. Because of what he’s done before. Because of the rings.
Cool. But we’re talking about THIS year. And if we’re talking about this year, why does Goff keep getting dismissed?
Does he need curly hair? Dreads? Does he need to be 6’2″ and run a 4.1 forty? Does he need to beat Cat Williams in a foot race? What exactly does Jared Goff need to look like for people to give him credit?
Dan Campbell has been saying it forever: “He’s the guy.” The coaching staff sees it. The locker room sees it. The results are there. But somehow there’s always another explanation for why the Lions are winning.
It’s Always Something Else
When Detroit wins, it’s the weapons. It’s Amon-Ra St. Brown. It’s Ben Johnson’s scheme. It’s the defense stepping up. It’s literally anybody except the quarterback orchestrating the whole thing.
Goff’s numbers might look “pedestrian” in certain games — but that’s the point. He’s not forcing it. He’s not playing hero ball. He’s doing exactly what the offense needs him to do, and the Lions keep winning because of it.
The effect he has on games gets credited to everybody else. That’s the story here.
So What’s the Criteria?
If Detroit had found a way to stop Baker Mayfield from juking them out of their jockstraps for that touchdown — if they were sitting at undefeated right now — Goff would be the MVP frontrunner. Nothing about his play would be different. Same stats. Same execution. Same leadership.
Just fewer losses.
That’s the whole argument against him right now. Not his arm. Not his decision-making. Not his clutch performances. Just the win-loss column having a blemish or two.
Meanwhile, Mahomes can have a down year by his standards and still get mentioned because of reputation. Tom Brady threw a game-losing interception that only got wiped out because of an offsides call, and he’s still treated like he was perfect.
Goff doesn’t get that benefit of the doubt. He has to be flawless AND win every single game for people to even consider him. That’s the double standard, and it’s exhausting.
Watch the tape. The guy is balling. The MVP conversation should include him whether Detroit’s undefeated or not.
The Takeaways
- Goff’s MVP case only lacks an undefeated record — his actual play has been elite
- The narrative around Goff constantly credits everyone else for the Lions’ success
- Mahomes gets MVP buzz on reputation while Goff has to be perfect to even get mentioned
