Javy Baez Simply Cannot Be a Detroit Tiger Anymore

Javy Baez received a standing ovation from Cubs fans like he was Lou Gehrig giving a retirement speech — then went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts, whiffing at pitches in the other batter’s box. He cannot be on this roster Opening Day 2025.

The Chicago Cubs crowd gave Javy Baez a standing ovation during his return to Wrigley Field. It looked like Lou Gehrig announcing his retirement out there. Heartwarming stuff, really touching moment for the former fan favorite.

Then he went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts.

Four. Strikeouts.

Swinging at pitches in the other batter’s box, per usual. And that right there is the entire Javy Baez experience distilled into one game. The nostalgia, the emotional reception, and then the absolute black hole at the plate that Tigers fans have been suffering through for years now.

This cannot continue. He cannot be here next Opening Day. Period.

The Tigers Have Actual Talent Now

Here’s what makes this so much worse than it was a year or two ago: Detroit actually has guys worth watching now. Tarik Skubal is a Triple Crown winning pitcher on his way to a Cy Young award. Riley Greene is an All-Star. Spencer Torkelson hit 30-plus home runs last season, went through the depths of hell this year, and is fighting his way back — dude had a four-hit night against the Cubs.

Four hits from Torkelson. One run scored by the Tigers.

How does that happen? Because in every critical moment, every single time the game is on the line, Javy Baez strikes out. Every. Single. Time.

We’re past the point of hoping he figures it out. We’re past the point of talking about his defense or his energy or his postseason experience from a lifetime ago. The Tigers are building something real with young talent that actually produces, and Baez is actively sabotaging it by occupying a roster spot and at-bats that need to go elsewhere.

The Contract Doesn’t Matter Anymore

Yeah, the money is ugly. Everyone knows the contract was a disaster the moment the ink dried. But at some point you have to stop letting sunk cost dictate roster decisions. Pay him to go away. Eat the money. Do whatever you have to do.

Because right now, this team is watching Skubal deal, watching Greene develop into a star, watching Torkelson claw his way back to relevance — and then watching Baez blow it when it counts. That’s not a playoff roster. That’s not even a competitive roster.

The Tigers have moved past the rebuild. The front office needs to move past Javy Baez.

Opening Day 2025 Cannot Include Javy

This isn’t about hating the guy. It’s about winning baseball games. Detroit has the pitching. Detroit has young position players showing real promise. What Detroit doesn’t have is room for a shortstop who gets standing ovations from opposing fans and then goes 0-for-4 with four punchouts.

Find a way to make it happen. Trade him, release him, send him to the moon — whatever it takes. But Javy Baez cannot be a Detroit Tiger next season. The window is opening for this team, and he’s standing directly in the way.

The Takeaways

  • Baez went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts against the Cubs despite receiving a standing ovation from Chicago fans
  • The Tigers have real emerging talent in Skubal, Greene, and Torkelson that Baez is actively holding back
  • Detroit needs to eat the contract and move on before Opening Day 2025 — no more excuses
