The Tigers Bullpen Is in Full Meltdown Mode and There’s No Help Coming

Kenley Jansen just blew his third straight save and the Tigers bullpen is officially a five-alarm fire. The worst part? There’s nobody to call for backup.

Somebody needs to blow the whistle on this Tigers bullpen. Kenley Jansen has now blown three consecutive saves — including two in a row this season — and the whole thing is falling apart faster than anyone wanted to admit.

Walk-off home runs aren’t good, folks. That’s not exactly groundbreaking analysis, but when your closer keeps coughing up leads, stating the obvious becomes necessary.

Will Vest: The Accidental Solution?

Here’s the weird thing about this mess: Will Vest might actually be the answer, and the numbers back it up in the strangest way possible.

Outside the ninth inning? Vest’s stats are dog water. But put him in the ninth and he transforms into one of the best pitchers in the league. It’s undeniable. So why isn’t AJ Hinch — supposedly the analytics guy, the situational guy — making this move?

If you’re going to live and die by the numbers, then live by THESE numbers. Vest in the ninth. Try something. Because what’s happening now clearly isn’t working.

The Underlying Numbers Are Terrifying

Even the guys who look okay on the surface are hiding some ugly truth underneath. Take Kyle Finnegan — his ERA sits at a pretty 0.61, but dig deeper and it’s a house of cards. Ten walks against just 11 strikeouts? A WHIP pushing 1.25? That’s defying math, and math always wins eventually.

Finnegan is getting away with it right now. He’s the only one. The rest of the bullpen? The numbers aren’t lying for them.

And here’s the fear that nobody wants to say out loud: Tommy Kahnle vibes. One day you wake up and it’s just… over. The music stops. That’s the nightmare scenario with Jansen right now, and it ain’t looking good.

No Help Is Coming

This is the bed the Tigers made for themselves. You go grab a bunch of minor league arms and KBO’s finest, you expect different results? The only outlet is surviving until the trade deadline.

Mason Miller? Chapman? Sure, that’d be nice. But we’re in late April and those moves aren’t happening tomorrow. Sign somebody? Who’s out there? Nobody’s coming to save this bullpen.

The starters need to go all nine innings. That’s the only real solution right now. Tarik Skubal coming out for the seventh was big — and yeah, he does it more than most. Only three pitchers threw more innings than him last year. Only one had more complete games. But you can’t count on complete games every night.

Jackson Jobe getting some BP sessions is encouraging. Him and Troy Melton getting healthy would be huge. Maybe Verlander eventually figures out whatever he’s figuring out — three innings pitched with a 12.00 ERA in May isn’t exactly inspiring confidence.

Until then? Dance with the girl you brought. Unfortunately, she’s flaking out. We’ve seen this movie before with Tigers closers. Valverde was unstoppable until he was unplayable. It falls apart fast.

You gotta hope the offense keeps carrying this team. And we all know that’s a losing proposition long-term.

The Takeaways

  • Kenley Jansen has blown three straight saves and the closer role is now a legitimate question mark
  • Will Vest’s ninth-inning numbers are elite — it might be time to give him the ball in save situations
  • No relief is coming until the trade deadline; the Tigers have to survive with what they’ve got
